Natalia Stanusch is a researcher at AI Forensics, a PhD Candidate in media studies at the University of Amsterdam, and a member of the Digital Methods Initiative. Her research critically examines the entanglements between technology, society, and policy, taking forms of independent investigations into platform harms, contributions to methods and concepts central to technology and society research, and public engagements via spoken and written word.

Natalia’s research foci meet at a crossing of critical data and algorithm studies, science and technology studies, and digital visual culture. She is an author of book chapters, articles, and video essays which range in scope from methodological interventions to original empirical and theoretical piecies.
In her work for the NGO AI Forensics, she realizes her goal of holding major technology platforms accountable by participating and leading independent technical investigations to uncover, expose, and disseminate information about the harms caused by their algorithms, and to inform actionable recommendations and evidence to support advocacy and policy. At AIF, she focuses on developing mixed methods approaches to conduct empirical and data-driven investigations, specializing in algorithmic auditing in the platform context and the online engagements with (generative) artificial intelligence.
As part of her intrest in interdisciplinary research practice and community learning, she engages in organization of hands-on workshops as well as collaborations with artists, designers, policymakers, and fellow researchers. She was an academic coordinator for a European non-profit DataEthics.eu, a research lead for ‘Slow AI/Esoteric AI’ project run by the collective AIxDESIGN & an author of a blog on art and technology at hashtagart.blog.
Natalia is currently pursuing a PhD in Media Studies from the Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis, University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands. She holds a MA in New Media and Digital Culture from the University of Amsterdam and a double-major BA in Communications and Media Studies as well as Art History from John Cabot University, Rome, Italy. During her PhD, she studied at the Summer Doctoral Program 2025 edition at Berkeley, CA, USA, organized by the Oxford Internet Institute & UC Berkeley School of Information.
